How much does SEO cost in 2026? Prices, packages and what you get
By Javier Fernández. Published
In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the average monthly retainer was $2,917, the most common was $501 to $1,000 a month, and one-off projects most often cost $2,501 to $5,000. At Sylvara Creative, monthly SEO starts at USD 750 / month and a technical SEO audit at USD 600.
How much does SEO cost per month?
Ongoing SEO usually costs from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month. Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey of 439 providers found an average retainer of $2,917 a month, with agencies averaging $3,209 and freelancers about $1,350. The single most common band was $501 to $1,000 a month.
Prices run higher in North America. In the same survey, 79.1% of providers in the US and Canada charged at least $1,001 a month. Averages are pulled up by large clients, so a local business with one location will usually sit at the lower end.
SEO pricing by model: retainer, audit, hourly and project
Monthly retainer: ongoing technical fixes, content and reporting for a flat fee. It's the most common model because SEO compounds over months.
One-time audit: a review of the site with a prioritized list of fixes. NAV43's pricing guide puts a basic technical SEO audit at $500 to $1,500 for small, simple sites and $1,500 to $5,000 for growing businesses with more complex sites.
Hourly: useful for advice or a few specific fixes. Ahrefs reports an average of $111 an hour, with consultants charging more than agencies or freelancers.
Project: a defined piece of work, such as a site migration, a content plan or a set of service pages. Ahrefs found $2,501 to $5,000 was the most common project price.
What drives the cost of SEO
Competition matters most. Ranking a dentist in a small town takes far less work than ranking a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles. Then comes the size and state of the site: a 10-page site with clean code costs less to fix than an e-commerce store with thousands of URLs and years of technical debt.
Scope is the third factor. A package that includes new content every month, link building or digital PR, several locations or several languages costs more than technical upkeep and reporting. Finally, who does the work: freelancers, agencies and consultants price differently, and US-based teams cost more than nearshore ones.
Low price SEO services: what you usually get
Low price SEO, at the bottom of the market, usually means a fixed package of automated work: a tool-generated audit, a few meta tags, directory submissions and a templated report. Some of that is useful for a very small site. The problem is that it rarely includes the work that moves rankings, like fixing real technical issues or writing pages that answer what buyers search.
The real risk is the occasional cheap package that buys links in bulk from low-quality sites. Google's spam policies prohibit link schemes, and those links can be ignored or lead to a manual action. Ask any low-cost provider exactly what they'll do each month and where links will come from. If they can't say, keep looking.
What you get at each SEO budget level
Under $500 a month: typically freelancers (Ahrefs found $251 to $500 among their most common bands). Expect basic on-page fixes and reporting, with little or no content. It can be enough for a local business in a quiet market.
$500 to $2,500 a month: this band includes the most common retainer in Ahrefs' survey ($501 to $1,000). Expect technical SEO, a few new or improved pages a month, Google Business Profile work for local businesses and monthly reporting in Search Console.
$2,500 a month and up: consultants and larger agencies, where Ahrefs found $2,501 to $5,000 to be the most common consultant band. Expect a dedicated strategist, more content, link building or PR, and work across several locations or markets.
As a nearshore team in Argentina, we price below US agency averages. Monthly SEO starts at USD 750 / month, a technical SEO audit at USD 600, and AEO/GEO (getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews) at USD 900 / month. Agencies can also resell our SEO under their own brand through our white label SEO service.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Expect months, not weeks. In our experience, first improvements typically appear within 2 to 3 months and solid results between months 4 and 6, depending on competition and the starting state of the site. Technical fixes on a site with clear problems can show sooner; a new domain in a competitive market takes longer.
Be wary of anyone who promises a date for the top spot. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and suggests asking what results to expect and in what timeframe.
How to judge an SEO proposal
A good proposal starts with your business, not a package. It should show what's wrong with your site today, which searches matter for your revenue, and what will be done in the first three months, in concrete deliverables: fixes, pages, links, reports.
Check four more things. Reporting should cover clicks, leads and rankings from Search Console and analytics, not just a ranking list. You should own everything: content, accounts and access. The contract should let you leave after a reasonable notice period. And the team should explain where links will come from in plain words. If a proposal guarantees rankings or charges per keyword in the top 10, compare it against at least one more quote.
